Project 2

A client requested that we design a rear extension to her sketches, with plenty of fenestration. This extension was to accommodate a new kitchen. We also designed a portal frame to enable an opening to be made in the back wall at ground floor level.

We agreed with Sutton Council Planning Department an arrangement which the client agreed was better than her sketches.

A view from the back garden showing the three slopes to the roof thereby reducing any obtrusive effects that the neighbours might feel.

In this photograph, the photographer is standing in the new doorway in the new back wall. The problem of cracking visible in this photograph was resolved by placing a portal frame to transmit the load from the top part of the existing back wall, the roof and first floor down to the existing foundations below the existing back wall.

This photograph shows much the same as the previous one but it also shows an old rusty beam which was removed as part of the refurbishment programme. A major consideration was to ensure the top of the new sloping roof was below the first floor windows and the roof slope appeared as that prevailling.
